Surprised at sale price

I watched an episode of Bargain Hunt (2020) yesterday and was surprised to see two Dansette Record Players being sold for £48. Pictures attached.

People have mental open spaces about these things.

They appeared to be completely unrestored, so despite the comments of the 'expert' about 'playing vinyls', they would need a fair bit of specialised work. Both dealers and private individuals who buy these things at auction are mostly interested in examples that just need a squirt of WD40 inside and Pledge outside.

Properly restored, they might have sold for £200 each.

Vintage record players such as these have been on a high value wise for some time.

However, in my experience many are bought by young people who want it to work like a modern unit.
So there will be little interest in tatty units in need of restoration. Looking online the cost of a restored one can be up to £400 depending on the model.

What's your opinion John? Too cheap or too expensive?

At Ron Rusbridge's auction they weren't attracting this much attention.

I thought the hammer price was about right given the condition. The 'expert' overpaid (£100 I think).

Cheap if you compare them to ebay prices even unrestored. Especially as they had legs included. Some sellers ask £25 a set for legs alone so on that basis at £48 the legs were cheap and the record players included free! As with all collectables, stuff is worth what the people will pay on the day and who sees it...

Ken I think they were sold very cheap, as Paul said they could sell for £200, or more as Lightning, £400, said after restoration.

It's their standard filler programme for the daytime schedule. They have literally thousands of episodes sitting on servers, edited to fit 30, 45 and 60 minute slots. The content dates slowly and isn't very memorable, so can be safely repeated multiple times. Perfect daytime chewing gum for the eyes - I like it.

4 Dansette record players were on sale today £80 the lot and sold , this was at Biggleswade.

That’s a bargain for someone. Incidentally I viewed BH on the iPlayer awaiting the start of the Rugby.

The Dansettes at Biggleswade were cheap but they were rough, they would need recovering to make them nice. They were later on offered singerly at low prices. I bought one as it was worth the asking price just for the useable parts.
I did buy a fairly nice Conquest from another stall at a reasonable price but again it will need fully overhauling and cosmetic refurbishment.

l did some work on one last year.

My complaint is the constant "whoosh" sound used to accentuate almost every camera shot change. I will not mention the amount of Tartan clothes though!
However, it is STILL our usual viewing at lunchtime. Will continue to be.
Even to the point of my recently stating that the bid would be £30 maiden bid for an original Ex-library of "You Only Live Twice" and would be by a lady who they zoomed in on!

I think I could almost do a University challenge on those repeats!

BH has evolved into a tried and tested formula, with every episode effectively identical, even down to the presenters' quips.

I too watch BH most lunchtimes. I miss Tim Wonacott, and Charlie Ross is a true professional.
Back to the two Dansettes - before the bidding started I said to my wife that they were only worth £50 tops in my book. Probably needed a lot of R & R.
If common or garden record players like dansettes are worth 200 quid in good nick to some folk, then what are Pye Black Boxes making these days ?

BBs are less fashionable, so fetch lower prices.

The Dansette name has become synonymous with the best of record players in the public mind - even the BH 'expert' implied this was the case, and may have actually believed it. We all know most Dansette models were very undistinguished and there were much better performers.

I find record player prices at local auctions erratic, to say the least.

As usual, it depends who turns up. Sometimes you can pick up a reasonably nice player that needs very little doing for £5 or £10... then again, you occasionally get a couple of bidders who have seen the £400 ones on ebay

Well, today, the Philips single record player sold for £30, showing a £24 profit.
Anyone notice the few quick views of shelves full of test gear now and again? Looked like a twin meter psu, maybe a Heathkit vtvm, a small sig gen and a Marconi coloured bench instrument of some sort.
The big down side for us both was Danny trying his best to imitate the very annoying commentators voice heard on those programmes where they visit each other's house or hotel.
His voice has always beeen annoying at most times where it often raises to a high pitch when expressing himself, like "Wellllll" as an example.
We learnt to live with it. But it was taken to a new level today we thought.
We didn't see the start, so don't know where buying was filmed.
Certainly some interesting looking test gear though.
Makes me wonder if it is a knowledgeable enthusiast, trying on achieving high prices to be paid by a punter thinking " that looks expensive, must be a bargain, would go nicely in my man cave".
