Heathkit speakers.
I have acquired a pair of Heathkit speakers, approx. 2 ft high by approx. 18” square.
They contain 8” dia. bass/mid. Goodmans drivers & 4” dia. Elac tweeters. They also have tweeter level controls. They are slot reflex loaded. The cabinets are well constructed, with good veneer. Initial listening showed a clear and smooth response. As the cabinets have no damping, I shall add some to the walls along with foam lining and some BAF wadding. Previous cabinet treatment has shown this is effective in reducing resonance and any bass ‘boominess,’ I’ve also bought a Heathkit Daystrom amplifier I intend to use with the speakers. Extremely well constructed, with a nice wooden cabinet. Last edited by Mgmaudio; 23rd Sep 2021 at 3:52 am. |

Re: Heathkit speakers.
Heathkit gear was usually very well designed. If they sound good I would be tempted to leave them as is. I have a pair of very large Heathkit Cotswolds and they benefitted from a re-cap but that was it. Resonances can be a part of the design. Post a pic if you can….I often see singles of their smaller units offered for sale but less often as a pair.

Re: Heathkit speakers.
If you do decide to add damping, do not use too much, say nothing more than some BAF wadding on the rear panel. Ovedamping can "tame" this type of enclosure far too much.

Re: Heathkit speakers.
Thanks, Edward.
I am aware of what you say. I’ve years of experience in this area, with different types of speakers. I have a friend who is a speaker designer and we have experimented with cabinets and enclosures of many kinds. |

Re: Heathkit speakers.
Well, they are now completed.
The changes have improved them. The bass is ‘tighter’ and better defined, making the midrange more ‘open’ and easier to listen to. The top end, unaffected by the cabinet improvements, is excellent. Those cone Elac tweeters are excellent units. Definitely an improvement. |
