Default How do I get this wheel off my radio tuner

I need to remove the wheel in the centre of the picture. It had two grub screws onto the shaft which I took out - that was hard enough! But now I can’t budge it. It looks like it is just pushed on to two flats on the shaft. Is it just fused on with age or is there some other fixing I’ve missed? It is really stuck!

It won't be 'fused on' but it may well be stuck. Try applying some dismantling fluid such as Plus-gas, or apply some heat to the wheel boss.

You may be able to use a puller if you have access to a suitable one.

If it's really stuck, consider something like a windscreen wiper / bearing puller like these examples:-

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-.../dp/B007Z9DG0A

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adjustable-.../dp/B06ZYGX7PR

(The above were the first examples of the two types I had in mind - available from many other sources and sellers).

The main thing to consider is whether there is enough space between the wheel and the nearby surface for the 'claws' of the puller to slip underneath it.

Are those four axial screws visible on the front face of the "wheel"? If so removing them and leaving just the boss behind might make it easier to use a puller.

If it's possible to withdraw the shaft from the chassis, the assembly would be easier to work on.

They look like moulding marks where the flywheel was cast.

Incidentally - the screw and nut on the nearest transistor look as though they are loose and should be tight.

Diecasting ejector marks, I think.

A puller seems to be the only way to go, but the Mazak metal may have gone crumbly.
At worst, you may need to find a friend with a lathe, and a chunk of brass or steel to make a new flywheel

Thanks for all replies, wheel still not budging but I haven’t spent much time on it.
Re. Screw on near transistor, yes it was loose thanks (but I hadn’t completely re-fitted them at this point).
Can’t get the shaft out due to string wrapped round it which I don’t want to mess with. Only need wheel off so that I can pull the back of the chassis down a bit more to get better access under pcb.
Will have to buy or devise a puller methinks.

I would persist with the oil.Try wrapping masking tape where you have the blue stuff(several turns) then grip the shaft there with mole grips/parallel pliers.A slight to and fro action on the flywheel may be enough to get it moving.Les.

Personally I would start by locking a pair of mini Molegrips onto the shaft then try and twist the weight on the shaft, see if you can break its hold.

As Paul suggested use penetrating oil and heat
If you stand the unit it on its end and use something to form a well around the centre .
Fill with the oil and leave for a while .
Then use perhaps two soldering irons together to get to a high enough heat on the centre boss .
Cheers

If there are no flats machined on the inside of the weight, I can't quite see any on the front of the wheel in pic, then Richard's suggestion is the way to go.

Check that the shaft doesn't run in a nylon/plastic bearing before applying heat.

Sometimes the pressure of the grub screws forms a ridge on the shaft that's large enough to prevent easy removal of whatever it is the grub screws were fixing, might worth trying to lock the shaft with some mole grips and trying to rotate the wheel while at the same time pulling it, I used to rotate whatever it was that was stuck anti-clockwise.

Lawrence.

Never knew the wiper puller tool existed! Could have done with one of those a while back on a previous car

That's exactly the way to do it.

Avoid a puller - the main flywheel part looks like 'monkey metal', and could easily bust into several pieces!

Nope ! I still don't get it why removing the flywheel would give you better access , removing the shaft as well maybe. Mick.
