Default Samsung WS-32Z419D CRT TV green not working.

Hi all.
My Samsung crt tv has been playing up these past few weeks. The picture started to 'boom' whenever there was a bright image shown and fine white horizontal lines would appear whilst the booming was happening.

Tonight I switched it to stand by and noticed a green flash on the screen flowed by a very bright green dot in the middle of the screen.
When I turned it back on I noticed that the green has gone. Black and white films are now a purple/pink colour and in the info display where it's usually green telling you which A/V input you're on is not showing up.
Is this a common fault with CRT tv's? I'm a total novice with crt as I usually dabble with vcrs and more mechanical stuff.
All I have is a multimeter for 'test' equipment. No 'scopes or any of that other gubbins.
I'd like to repair it as I still use all of my analog A/V stuff on it, plus it has an HDMI input for my youview.

Many thanks
Richard.

The 1st picture was taken last week to show the thin white horizontal lines that show up when the screen booms on bright images.

Could be worth checking the CRT base for dry joints. If it’s marked on the PCB, which pin is the green gun, then it would also be a good place to start tracing back from to see if there are any dead components.

If you can identify which are the 3 wires from the CRT PCB which are the red, green and blue drive then you could swap 2 over and see if you lose that colour. If you do then the CRT is not likely to be at fault.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm waiting for someone to come over to help me lift the TV out of where its plumbed into then I can get the back off and take a look for anything obvious. I'll post a few pictures of what I find.

Thanks again,
Richard.

If this is the Slimfit model, Check the 3 130k resistors on crt base.

these did suffer from dry joints on the crt pcb so worth a good reflow

Drys are very easy to spot with a head magnifier.I used to pride myself on finding all those intermittent faults etc.

Of course, there is always the risk the crt has expired,as long as it is not a Phillips crt.

The blooming suggests poor regulation somewhere, which may well have caused the other problem. Personally I'd measure the B+ line from the PSU (to the line o/p stage) and work forward from there.

Yes, it's the Slim-fit TV. When it's working it's a great set!
I don't think the CRT is a Philips, I'm pretty sure it's a Samsung tube if I recall from the last time the back came off the damn thing.

When I've got the help to get it out of the rack I'll get the back off and look closely for dry joints on the CRT PCB, I'll probably reflow the whole board just to make sure.

That blooming problem, Ben, I'll have a look and see if I can measure something with my multimeter, as I said before, I'm a total novice with CRT TV sets so I am a bit flummoxed by the thing. Give me an old vcr any day. Haha.

Thank you all for the replies. I'll report back when I can get the back off.

Cheers
Richard.

*Edit*
Since writing this reply, the green has come back on the OSD. There's still a very noticeable pinky tint to the screen though.

Probably not relevant here, but you can get missing colours from a loose or faulty SCART lead if the set is in RGB mode.

Sounds very much like dry joints to me.

Well I think I might have found the culprit of the strange behaviour.
I examined the crt pcb and found quite a few suspicious looking joints. I re-flowed them all but still the same problem. I took the pcb off the crt carefully and noticed an electrolytic cap with a bulged top. I don't have any replacements so I've got to order some and see if that cures the problem. The green seems to be back but the pinky tinge is still there even with the colour turned off through the OSD menu. It's cap CF04 which is bulged. When I'm able to obtain a replacement then I'll let you all know if it cures the problem.

Thanks all for the replies and hints.

Richard.

Richard I think its very certain each colour gun is driven by a transistor which should be checked for leakage and short or open circuit

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Would the colour gun transistors be on the crt pcb?
Forgive my ignorance on this matter, I've never repaired or have any fault finding experience on crt tv's.

Thanks again
Richard.

Your particular set uses 3 SiL ICs instead of transistors, one for each gun.

Yes, the 3 along the top of the CRT pcb on your photo which I think you have already resoldered, Sil = single inline.
I do have the service manual too btw.

edit: added pic of pcb

Ah, thank you for that info. I will double check the connections on them tomorrow. Are these SiL IC's still available to buy if they are defective?

Many thanks again,
Richard.

probably, what you could do though is swap two of them over and see if the fault transfers to a different gun, you have three identical channels after all.

Ps. the pcb is marked R, G and B for each stage.

Ps.2 SiL refers to the particular IC package type rather than a particular function.
