Default Grundig Music Boy 1000 troubles

For daily listening we use a Music Boy 1000 radio which performs very well giving a pleasing sound however, yesterday it was working well when switched off but turning on again a few hours later?
The volume was down and it appeared off tune. Turned volume up and retuning I noticed that when going near it with a hand to operate the controls would cause the signal to virtually disappear.
Still sounds ok with volume turned up and touching the aerial has no effect but obviously something is amiss early on in the FM tuner section (AM ok)
Where do you reckon I should start looking?

Alan

Unusual for parts to fail (at least in a transistor set) between switch off and switch on. I think I'd start with switches. Some good switch cleaner might work wonders.

Think simple!
Don't know why I didn't think switches? Dismantled it and applied servisol to the push button switch contact cases which must have many contact's in as they are very long.
Allowed it to dry off overnight and normal service appears to be restored! Nice sounding set.

Although the original title was more amusing I have updated to Grundig

Thanks Mike (Crackle)

Didn't spot that - auto suggestion problems, where would we be without it!
Anyway, it's still not right. FM has lost a lot of sensitivity and also loses signal (volume) when attempting to operate the set. Still sounds well but what could be causing this effect?

Yes, am is not the best but it hasn't got any worse.

I am assuming that your model is actually a 'Melody Boy 1000'?

If so, I have had a few of these where T1 (BF314) has failed, usually open collector. This is the VHF RF amp transistor, located in the tuner can.

I would start by replacing this, and also T2 while you are in there so that you don't have to dismantle the can twice.

Thanks, yes it's a Melody Boy and in good condition!
I have the service data dvd so will print it out and have a look at the area your suggesting.

Well we've been using the set but it has gradually been getting worse until the other day it was un-tunable and substituted it for another set.
Tackled it today and was dismayed to find where the FM tuner was - quite inaccessible I thought! Took some photos before the dismantle which did go a bit better than I feared!
Changed T1 and 2 in the tuner and hey presto, it only worked!
Delighted with the repair which although fiddly was doable returning a nice sounding set to working order.
