Default Admiralty capacitors - suggestions

As part of a recent Hall I have a pretty grubby homelab type 10 signal generator.

There's some really interesting looking caps in there Admiralty 1.0MFD 1000V that I'd like to keep the cases on.

Does anyone have experience in fitting these things and filing with modern caps?

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve, they are a paper in oil type and normally very reliable. If you can test at working voltage and they are not leaking I would continue to use them

I agree with Ed, there's every chance these are as good as the day they were made!

I repaired a GEC LCR bridge recently with some of these large capacitors, they all tested fine at the rated voltage. Which is just as well as a 2MFD block is used a reference capacitor, with hand written note of 1.95 on the back, the ordinary paper capacitor used to trim the value to 2MFD was knackered though.

I believe many of these PIO caps were filled with PCB too!!. I would be very careful when handling the oil and oily insides.

Take care not to get any ex-capacitor oil on you or your surroundings. Some of them used PCBs type oils. There's no easy way to tell, so treat it all as risky.
