Belling 'Handy Heater' - asbestos replacement? - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

I have one of these and it needs the decayed rubber mains wiring replaced. It's the same model as in this video, though in far better condition than his.

The heater element has a wire that appears to be asbestos sheathed. In the video he discovers asbestos washers, though the wire sheathing looks different on his.

If I'm to use the thing or pass it on, I'd prefer it to be safer than before. I realise if undisturbed it's possibly fine, but in a convection heater it seems like prevention is better than cure. What would be the best material to replicate the properties in this instance?

Just replace the mains lead, but leave the asbestos well alone and don't disturb it.

What he did in that video will have been enough to release a LOT of fibres; it may not matter, it may kill him - I'd say don't take the risk.

Looks like the one in the video had already been rewired badly- surely the wire ends should have been underneath the |___| washers?

The crimp terminals used in the video are not rated at a high enough temperature.
They will begin to smell if the heater is used for a reasonable amount of time.

This is one of those 'urban' explorer (young blokes film abandoned places) videos, this place was abandoned circa 2000

Your better off not using crimp terminals if you use the wrong ones . Somewhere I got genuine ones but it’s not necessary. They do get quite hot these heaters. If I was doing it I would slide some heat proof sleeving over the ends of the cable . Andy
