More done to the 1509 today.

Connected to a bigger load and power meter, max ouptut is around 250W, there was no output on the lowest range - this appears to be due to a poor valve in the oscillator - once changed there was output.

We also have modulation, there is a bias issue - the standing current will not drop below 75ma per valve - the -ve voltage will not go any lower than -36V, I suspect the selenium rectifier, and associated capacitors are well past their prime - I will build some modern replacement modules, one for the modulator, and one for the buffer/multiplier stage.

The VFO/Oscillator calibration is out by a mile, this will need more investigation.

It does appear to work quite well though, even considering the problems.

I was just looking through the forthcoming VMARS members auction catalog, the only T1509 item listed was a control unit.

Hi Steve,
Is it a type 88 or a 310?
Cheers

Found out this photo taken probably 30 years ago for you Sean, of the late Vic Reynolds, G3COY, who was the radio instructor at an Air Cadet unit in Staffordshire for many years. Vic was a radio op on Hudsons during WW2 and built his ATC station around the 1154/55, with a later T1509 addition. Note the dummy load !

The equipment in the photo was fully operational and was used on the ATC HF National Net around 5MHz for many years, using the callsign VQ5X01.

Happy days !!

How interesting to see the picture of Vic, now S/K sadly.

That T1509 is the one that I bought for £200 from the ATC in Staffs a good many years ago. It was in near mint condition when I got it and after cleaning and polishing was probably the best one around. I used it on the vmars net and as you may imagine had very good reports from everyone.

In 2004 I passed it on to someone who now stores it in a railway museum in or near Swanage in Dorest.

I've lost contact with the new owner so it would be interesting to hear if anyone from the area knows of it.

What a great picture, and a superb shack!

Hope to get more work done on the 1509 soon - life has become rather busy at present!

Cheers

..and just to add a bit more about the ATC T1509s... When these were first issued to the control and sub-control stations on the (then) three ATC HF networks (A (SK4B--), B (VQ5X--) and C (IQ8Y--)) most Sqns were in fairly old wooden huts, and those that had a 1509 issued had to build up the floor underneath to stop them either listing or going straight through RA17s were also issued to the control stations - quite a luxury in the 1970's.

And in 1976 or thereabouts I joined a small group of RAF ground radio bods and removed a T1509 from the Tx site at RAF Coningsby. All of us in one Land Rover, if I remember correctly !!

Sorry Cliff - Lots has happened, but not so much on the 1509 - it resides at Chris's place (Onewatt) and access to the unit is a little tricky during the winter.

I think we are planning to get some more done and get it on the air within the next 2 months.
