Default Help me identify a loose spring, Garrard 3000

Hi all

I picked up a lovely Hacker GP42 with a Garrard 3000 it works brilliantly but will only play manually. The previous owner gave me a spring in an envelope that apparently fell out a while ago I wondered if anyone can identify it for me and tell how and where to replace it?

Thanks Lawrence..

So this part has nothing to do with the fact that the player wont work in Auto?

I've never had anything to do with one but so far as I know it needs to be fitted for the deck to function as it should, someone else might be able to advise more specifically.

Blimey that looks properly fiddly to get back in! Might be easier with the deck removed from the cabinet. I’ll give it a bash tomorrow, I am really impressed with the sound quality from this thing. Much better than my Philco model 60.

It might help you to download the Service Manual for your Garrard Model 3000 from the "Vintage Radio Data" link above RHS. You'll need the Garrard 3500. Then also look at the Garrard "Autoslim" Thread in the Stickies above. This has the same under-deck-plate mechanism as yours. BTW, it's not really fair to compare the Hacker GP42 to a Philco Model 60 - the Hacker would have cost twice as much, but is unlikely to sound twice as good.

Hi Edward thank you for your comments. I do have the SM for the 3500, is doesnt really tell you how to install the overload spring just where it goes. Actually I think the Hacker sounds way better than my Philco, the volume, clarity and bass is excellent the Philco sounds good but doesnt seem to have the same depth as the GP42. Anyway its new project and I am already enjoying working on it, the previous owner said it has some extensive restoration work about 10 years ago but I have stripped it down yet so that remains to be seen!
