Slotted Line
In the wanted section the above was requested, I was unable to help, but it reminded me of being shown, by the chaps in the Radar department, of neons being used to carry out various measurements and tuning of Magnetron/Klystrons and wave guides, if I remember correctly.
It’s a very long time ago so I wonder if other forum folk have done this, or could clarify, thanks. John |

Re: Slotted Line
Slotted lines were also used with an amplitude-modulated signal generator. The probe was a diode detector into an audio voltmeter + amplifier/speaker. This allowed the VSWR of a load to easily be measured. The much lower threshold voltage of the diode than the strij
king voltage of a neon was an advantage. Neons grew DC bias arrangements to put them just below striking to help this, but hysteresis wasn't removed. Marconi Instruments made sig gens, detectors and indicator meters with VSWR scales for the AM technique. I used this at uni. David
