Default BBC Radio 5 Live off air on 693kHz in NE England.

Today at the time off writing this in NE England BBC R5 is off air on the medium waveband. Let's hope it's not another MW switch-off.

Off air for essential repairs. That's OK because if they are fixing it at least we know the service will continue.

I'm sure this transmitter site dates back to the early days of radio.

Hi David, yes Stagshaw. It was I believe the original transmitter for the NE region.
I may well still have its original generator room for the various supplies.
The mast, which is difficult to see from the air is a VRP for the eastbound runway at Newcastle airport.

The mast is very visible from the ground beside the A68 just to the north of Corbridge, close by Hadrians wall, though it's not that old.

The Stagshaw transmitter was returned to full service yesterday, coming in loud and clear.

Here in N E England we still have five medium waveband stations to listen to.

BBC R4 603KHz. BBC R5 693KHz. Talksport 1071KHz. Greatest Hits 1152KHz.
Absolute Radio 1215KHz.
BBC Radio Scotland is receivable from the Westerglen transmitter on 810KHz.
