Default Chakophone No. 9. Two valve set from 1925.

Last Thursday I got very lucky we happened to be passing this set that was listed on eBay ( we work in transportation by the way so we're allowed out ) a deal was done and the set was collected it's was amazingly original right down to the grid bias battery but in a bit of a state the set has now been stripped cleaned had its flaky wiring replaced and all three capacitors and is now up and running beautifully.

That's a lovely piece of equipment you have there ! Is it for Headphones only, or would it drive a high impedance horn type speaker ? I suppose it would depend on the strength of the output signal.
Anyway, it's a very nice set.

Splendid, you can't beat brass and black for style and function. I can imagine the scene, "Oh, just let father play with his radio dear, let's make tea". It must have been quite expensive in 1925.

The Bank of England inflation calculator gives the 1925 cost of £8 as equivalent to £490.02 in 2019

I'm surprised it's that low! Basically it's the cost of a mid priced smart phone. That's if these sorts of calculations are directly comparable.
That aside it's always interesting to see examples of these types of early commercial radios. I also rather like the breadboard type with the 'workings' on full display. Those early valves are such an elegant shape!
Maybe I'm just sad.

How nostalgic! When I was a small child my father who was a radio enthusiast had a sort of junk box. I kept some toys in it but at the bottom were the components of an old radio very much like those in the photos above. No case but carefully bent insulated wires, two tuning condensers ( polar precision); three valves with bases. They had plated terminal connections and designed to be screwed down to a breadboard. I still had the parts until about 30 yrs ago

Compared to the cost of some sets at that time it seems quite reasonable. I'm trying to get this one added to radiomuseum.org as they only have a copy of the advert and the only other one I can find pictures of inline seems to have been butchered.
It actually performs quite well too.

A Chakophone No 9 set featured in the "Going Back" series in Practical Wireless Jan 1972, only an internal view was shown, the layout was different from the set featured in the post. Not much research on vintage sets seems to have been done by this time (they were only just becoming collectable), the authors speculated it might be home made or a kit set.

Gridiron I don't suppose you have a scan of the article ? The only other one I can find on the internet is incomplete and has a slightly different layout I actually think it's a bit later than mine.

Had a look it's the same model but the original transformer which should be mounted on the front panel has been replaced by a larger one which seems to have facilitated moving the two valves stupidly close to the Variometer.
