Yes we'd expect a great improvement listening in the normal stereo rather than (summed) mono. So there's probably no need to bother about a sample recording since you seem to have sorted out the monitoring issue yourself.

What happens in this case is called comb filtering. The azimuth error causes a time delay between channels, which causes sounds present on both channels to move in and out of phase as frequency increases, giving a response with a series of peaks and troughs, hence the term.
