Proudly presenting Russian TV "KVN-49"
Hello everyone!!!!
I promised to McIntyre to show the first Russian popular TV KVN-49. It had been produced from 1949 through 1962 and had a "Direct Amplifying" scheme. CRT diameter is only 18 cm, 3 first tv channels can be received. It has 16 Octal "RCA-licensed" tubes, except 807, string P.A. Power consumption approx. 200 Watts. Over 1.300.000 KVN`s were produced. Alexandrov Radio Works, near Moscow. I think it`ll be interesting for someone.... Here is the schematic diagram (DjVu format, www.lizardtech.com): http://rw6ase.narod.ru/tw_/kwn49.djvu Here are different photos of the unit: (To see photo, simply click an orange banner with filename) http://rw6ase.narod.ru/tw_/kwn49.jpg http://rw6ase.narod.ru/tw_/kwn49linz.jpg http://rw6ase.narod.ru/tw_/kwn49_4zkr.jpg http://rw6ase.narod.ru/tw_/kwn49_4sz.jpg http://rw6ase.narod.ru/tw_/kwn49obl.jpg Copyright Valeriy Harchenko, http://rw6ase.narod.ru My own KVN (see attachment, very dark photos). 1954. Working fine I restored it 3 months ago and I often turn it on to see some films in black and white on a tiny screen. |

Good morning Digger,

Unfortunately they are not. I`d been searching for my KVN for approximately 4 months. The reason is that in early 60-s and 70-s many people made a lot of alteration with their KVNs. The most popular alterations were: 1) Insatalling a rectangular 35cm CRT 35LK2b (this requires a changing of the string output transformer (or it`s calling FBT?), CRT coils, tubes and a lot of schematic) Unfortunately my Grandfather did so with his KVN in the middle 50-s, and 25 years ago his KVN was throwed out. 2) Installing a PTK block (channel selector with Heterodyne) for 5 or 12 channels to be received. This also requires many changes in the schematics. Because of these reasons an ORIGINAL KVN is not easy to get in our days. (angry smile is there, `cause I`m worrying about it) Some old apparates can be found on a wastes, or far away from big sities, where people are not so wasteful. A big problem for collectors like me is a homeless people who are destroying an old apparates throwed in a waste to get some Copper and Aluminium. Best regards, Digger. |

Hi Digger
Nice to see a TV enthusiast from another country with a set that's probably unknown in the UK. The usual English term is "Line Output Transformer", often abbreviated to "LOPT". Occasionally the term "flyback transformer" is used. I have never heard "string transformer" which is presumably a direct translation from Russian. Good luck with your set. Jeffrey |

String being a synonym for line, you mean, Jeffrey?

Hello Michael!!!! Nice to see a KVN in a good condition like Yours!!!!!!
But You have a little problem I think: normally an image should be rectangular, cutted only by a black plastic frame around the CRT. All You`ve got to do is to move coils on the CRT closely to the screen or, in another words, closely to the front panel. Then adjust V-size and H-size as You wish to see a good picture. Best regards from Russia!!! |

Re: Proudly presenting Russian TV "KVN-49"
Hello, Digger. Just to let you know that I picked up Russian television several times last summer on Band 1, Channels R1 and R2, via Sporadic-E reception on a very simple aerial. Very interesting !
Greetings from England! Best Wishes, John.
