SERT Journal
Prior to 1990 SERT (Society of Electronic & Radio Technicians) published
Journal (magazine). Does amyone know if there are any scanned on the web ? Articles included manufacturers products and development. It is likely the magazine was only available to members. In 1990 SERT and IIEIE merged to form IIE, later IET.

Re: SERT Journal
I can't answer your question about the Journal, but here is the coat of arms to spur you on with your noble quest. If I recall correctly the Society was based in a large rambling old house on Oldham Road here in Rochdale, Lancs.

Re: SERT Journal
That brings back some memories, I joined SERT a life time ago, and attended some meetings, and visited the newly opened ITV station in Cardiff. Unfortunately I only remained a member for a few years, due to the distance I had to travel. Sorry I don’t know the answer to your question.

Re: SERT Journal
When I started teaching C&G 2240 Electronics Servicing, it was a joint qualification with EEB (Electronics Examination Board) formerly Radio & TV Exam Board. They were on
the 4th floor of Savoy Hill House when the IIE were in the building, which was one of the first UK broadcasting sites. Building occupied by current IET. Later I was elected MIIE EngTech, and was involved with the design of successor servicing qualification, C&G 6958.

Re: SERT Journal
Hi Try a query to the library of the IET, they have scanned many of their older journals and they may be available on line with possibly a small fee if you are not a member

Re: SERT Journal
The British Library might also be worth a try; as a "deposit library" - see https://www.legaldeposit.org.uk/ - they should have copies.
[sadly I am no longer registered as a 'reader' at the Bod]

I have a vague recollection of being encouraged to join or subscribe to SERT, this was at Salford Tech. Perhaps it was the Electronic Servicing lecturer Mr Smith?

Re: SERT Journal
I too became a "Sert" ified engineer when I had passed my City in Guilds E224 course, but I decided the cudos of having SERT after my name was not going to get me any more money, thus I let my membership lapse..

Re: SERT Journal
We were sent a copy of the SERT journal with our names in the C&G exam pass list. I still have mine somewhere, but also didn't pursue it further.

Re: SERT Journal
I found this in Wireless World, thought it might be of interest.

Re: SERT Journal
Looked through various bookcases today to find nine SERT journals ranging from 1976 to 1979. During this period the title changed from SERT to Electronic Technology.
Never a member myself but a senior engineer and mentor whose membership level was FSERT passed them down for interesting content, particularly in the student sections. Here they had worked examples of City and Guilds 272 colour part III past exam paper questions. Subscription rates rates rose from £10 to £12 per anum (76-79) and their editorial office was located at Faraday House, 8-10 Charing Cross Road London. Scanned a couple of journal front covers. Rich

Re: SERT Journal
Many thanks for the replies. A kind forum member is sending me some copies.
Professional membership based on industry qualifications was probably the reason for formation of SERT, with the need for "qualified engineers". Sadly this trade could exist without it, as qualifications were not a prerequisite. Techs may not have been offered training by small firms, and some dealers may have used in house manufacturer training, or those in the TV rental trade also had their own schemes. (similarly, PO/BPO/BT had their internal scheme ) In 1981 a range of engineering disciplines were integrated in the Engineering Council UK, and titles e.g. CEng, IEng & EngTech for the electronics field. Membership determined by nominated qualifications, experience, and continuing professional development. The subject of qualifications over the years deserves its own thread, but as an example C&G2240 had 3 parts, all involving practical class work, theory exams, and a time-constrained practical test. This all ended in 2003. The successor (without a practical test) continued until 2012.

Re: SERT Journal
In the July 1964 edition of Wireless World there is an introduction to SERT.
I am unsure if the rules of the forum allow me to print it here, so Mods delete as you see fit, thanks. John |

Re: SERT Journal
Very useful information. The first chairman EAW Spreadbury will be known as the
author of some TV servicing books. In those times the dissemination of knowledge and good practice were undertaken using meetings, conferences, and printed media ; all these can be performed today online.
