Tandberg Model 2 tape recorder
This arrived to me in Sydney from Norway yesterday. Nice original machine. New reel drive belt, and all works nicely!

Re: Tandberg Model 2 tape recorder
Very nice looking machine, looks really good condition.
A co-incidence about 4 days back I was looking at the instruction manual (model 2-T) because it also covers other models like the Model 5 Stereo Quadruple, I had seen a nice looking Model 5 online and wondered why it was called "Quadruple". David |

Re: Tandberg Model 2 tape recorder
Quarter track, presumably, at a time when such things were an innovation (1959-ish).

Re: Tandberg Model 2 tape recorder
Yes I think so. The manual (s) refers to the Model 4 and Model 5 stereo heads as quadruple, for the playback/record head it calls it a special made in-line stereo quadruple.
The manual states that the Model 5 can playback and record 4 track and 2 track mono and stereo but needs an additional external record amplifier for stereo. I do not think I have previously heard tape heads referred to as quadruple. David |

Re: Tandberg Model 2 tape recorder
You should replace those horrible Hunts capacitors.

Re: Tandberg Model 2 tape recorder
Difficult to tell for sure from the photos but the brown bodied Hunts with grey/light green labels look like the type that are potted with a tar like black substance which can turn to a horrible sticky mess.
As Michael recommends certainly worth replacing the Hunts in a unit this old or at minimum measuring them for leakage etc. David |

Re: Tandberg Model 2 tape recorder
So those Hunts capacitors are marked at 1500VDC - do they really need to be that highly rated? Surely 600 volts rating would be ok?

Re: Tandberg Model 2 tape recorder
Generally I would say 600VDC is fine.
One capacitor that often is higher DC rated/may have an AC voltage rating, is the output capacitor (phase correction ?) that sometimes is across the primary of the output transformer. Certainly try and identify the capacitors on the schematic as a double check for actual operating voltage. David |

Re: Tandberg Model 2 tape recorder
I think the reason many of the smaller values are rated at such a high DC voltage is simply that capacitor manufacturers did not consider it worthwhile to manufacture them at lower voltage ratings, the physical size of the capacitor being proportional to capacitance and voltage, and when the capacitance is small enough, the resulting decrease in physical size at lower voltage ratings would not have been practically useful given the way electronics ware built in those days (point-to-point wiring or fairly large PCBs) so it was a way for capacitor manufacturers to optimize their production. Pure speculation on my part though.
