And vice-versa. In Bolton (Near Winter Hill) We could pick up ATV on Ch8 on an indoor aerial from Litchfield, but nothing on Ch4 BBC1 from Sutton Coldfield. When UHF started my rotatable aerial would pick up Sutton Coldfield with a snowy picture, but when C5 started from Litchfield that came in very stong and noise free.

Where I lived in Kent near Wrotham hill you could often get a 405 line transmitter on every channel, two on channel 11 Mendelsham and Rowridge by changing the polarisation. Used to get French 819 TV when it was foggy, no sound though and a two pictures with a line down the middle.

When we lived on the east Lizard coast in Cornwall we were only 50' asl but with a loft 405 line TV aerial we could get clear snow free pictures on BBC1 on ch2 from North Hessary Tor, about 60 miles distance and ITA on ch12 from Caradon Hill, about 40 miles distance. We could get a snowy BBC1 picture from Redruth on ch1. In all the villages along this coastline despite the distances from Caradon Hill and North Hessary Tor there were very few outdoor 405 line aerials to be seen.
During normal or flat conditions you could also pick up the sound from the ITA St Hilary transmitter on ch10.
The fun started during tropo lifts on band 1 you could see Crystal Palace co channeling with Redruth on ch1, with grainy pictures possible from Rowridge on ch3, Haverfordwest or Les Platons on ch4 and Wenvoe on ch5. Slight co channel interference would be caused to BBC1 on ch 2 either from the Caen transmitter in northern France or Holme Moss near Huddersfield.
During the same conditions on band 3 you could get ITA pictures on ch8 from Presely, a three way pile up on ch9 from Croydon, Stockland Hill and Freemont Point, clear snow free pictures on ch10 from St Hilary, and reasonable pictures on ch11 from Chillerton Down on the Isle of Wight.
During summertime Sporadic E opening band 1 would be full of continental 625 and 819 line stations with the local BBC1 being completely swamped out by this co channel interference.
Thinking back its pretty amazing results from just a loft mounted aerial and in such a low location.

Seen in Wigan, an Antex 5 VHF element channel 9 and 12 with a group C/D for UHF, it’s directed towards Winter Hill. Apologies for the quality, it was raining and the photo taken through the window of the bus I was on.

Here's an nice intact array I drive past occasionally on the A35 at Wilmington in East Devon. A 3 element Band 1 with a 5 element Band 2, and a Group A all mounted together. It seems to have survived very well!

Very close to the Stockland Hill transmitter which the band 3 and UHF aerials must be pointing to.The band 1 aerial was probably on North Hessary Tor Ch 2.

I saw that one a few days ago coming back from Exeter, I will have to go back and photograph that I thought, to late apparently.

I saw another one in Chard a while back and thought the same, but I have forgotten where it was.

Re post no. 625 (and this on a thread about 405 lines!)

A Telerection jobbie, inclined at 15 degrees as if it were sniffing the breeze for a trace of signal. They look impressive, however the reflector is a tad too short and the director a tad too long... I would lay a small wager that the junction box is cracked open as the alloy they used for the connections to the 'D' impedance links corrodes and expands and shatters the box.

Me and Mrs S visited nearby Hatfield House today and then had a wander around Old Hatfield and I spotted this Band I/Band III array on a restaurant that's undergoing renovation. It would've been for Ch1- Crystal Palace, and Ch9 - Croydon. I wonder if it'll survive the building work...

I have spotted this one in Elm Road when passing through Hook on the Leatherhead Road A243 to the Kingston by Pass. A nightmare to stop but Sunday morning proved to be light traffic.

An extra bonus not seen from the A243 is the 'bow tie' UHF aerial exclusive[?] to DER rentals.

The high parts of Chessington are very suited to long distance reception.
Many years ago I repaired a Ferguson 1400 3653 and upon returning it to the customer, received very watchable pictures on every position of the VHF tuner. They had a simple Band 1/3 outside aerial. Regards, John.

Over the decades I must have walked past this countless times. It’s located near Bath Abbey and predates the local Bath relay station which started on 405 in 1968. This large 405 array is still looking in good condition despite its age of 50-60 years.
It’s pointing towards. South Wales BBC1 from Wenvoe on ch5 and HTV from St Hilary on ch10

Re post 631,

That is indeed an impressive Belling & Lee double 9. I like the fact that B&L used a larger spacing for their double 9 el versions compared to their double 6s. This means that you actually do get a gain improvement over a single 9 - unlike other manufacturers who kept the same spacing for their double designs which resulted in a significant inter-element detuning - since the doubles were merely two unaltered singles side-by-side.

I was travelling through a rather nice part of Hove today.[South Coast Nr. Brighton] and stopped to take this picture of an absolute cracker!

Not 100% which stations are being received, maybe Chillerton Down and originally Truleigh Hill relay. You don't see many in this condition today. John.

Maybe off topic, but I wonder how many members will look on with nostalgia old SKY satellite dishes.

Often illustrating poor neighbourhoods with dishes like "flying ducks", along the road and especially on terraces indiscriminately placed to save time whilst the better off have them either on the chimney or at the back of their property out of sight.

Not to be missed, blocks of flats, even with communal aerials, where the dish marks the territory of those who can afford £500 per year plus the license fee and those who can't or won't.

All surely of historical significance?

I don't know if the law has changed, but in the 1980's when satellite tv was becoming popular, communal satellite dishes were usually illegal. This was because a dish serving more than one residence was, in law, a cable network, and the law had given exclusive rights to cable operators, meaning that there could only be one operator in any given area. An item in the "New Scientist" at the time reported that, while one government department was encouraging the use of communal satellite dishes to avoid their ugly proliferation, a representative of the cable operators confirmed that legal action would be taken against any communal satellite dish installation. Communal aerials for terrestrial TV were exempt.

The last one I actually remember fitting was on a new house in Petts Wood, just a single dipole with 'twigs' although I don't know that a band 1 aerial was really necessary as we were looking directly at Crystal palace and most sets needed an attenuator.
