I knew there had been a version of Laplink for Windows, but I have only ever seen the DOS version in action. I knew nothing of LfW's ability remotely to control the distant computer beyond just file viewing and transfer.

We used to use Laplink a lot at work back in the day.
After better methods came along we still used the expression "Laplink" to mean a data transfer by whatever method was convenient.

I suppose it's the same as saying "dial-in" for a pcAnywhere or similar support connection, even when done through nailed-up connections

Here is my laplink cable

I continued to carry that in my car to every job until I retired four years ago, I suppose it was like a babies security blanket!

We used to run "Spinrite" overnight on a bench-full of machines with 40MB MFM drives ST-506 duel ribbon interface.

Of course we had to partition them as two 20MB volumes, DOS 3.3 could only see up to 32MB.

I think those machines had a CPU clock at 10MHz, there was a little switch at the back to reduce it to 8MHz if things got too fast.
