Default Pye P800 Spanish model?

Just seen this advertised on a local second hand site. Appears to be a P800. Maybe this was an export model, or even made in Spain, as the rear cover has writing in Spanish and bears 'Pye S.A.' (Sociedad Anónima= PLC).

A quick web search turned up nothing. Anybody seen this 'un before? I would date it as late '60s as a rough guess.

Interesting model..As far as I understand
Pye we're taken over by Philips in
1966 though kept their models
separate for some time.. Could this
have been a Philips branding exercise,
Much like the Radiola make in France
(and possibly Spain?) timewise it fits.

The implosion protection will put a date on it. if it is a hard plastic shell I would say early 1960's. Same if it is Twin panel. Fenbrige guard a little later and rimband with 'push through' rather than a mask, mid to late 1960's.
I wonder if the chassis is similar to a UK model? Pye seem to have used the 11U chassis for a while with various CRT presentations.

It looks distinctly pre-Philips.

Given the economic and political situation, many manufacturers had separate branches in Spain, it seems.

That's a fantastic looking set Ben, I'd be after that like a shot! Are you considering taking it on? I'd be interested to know how rare 60s sets are in Spain and whether there is enough of a collectors' scene to command strong prices.

Looks like it has vhf and Uhf tuners on it judging by the 2 knobs on the right. The Spanish second channel, TVE 2,started on Uhf in Nov 1966, though tests started in Jan 1965 so its unlikely
the set is earlier than that.

There's an American guy living near Barcelona who pops up on American forums... He paid I think 500 euros a while back for a philco predicta that ended up in Spain in the 1960s.

Did Pye have any factories in Spain, or have a local assembly arangement?

I was wondering if sets were imported as kits with some locally sourced parts (including the case) to meet a quota.

It's advertised fairly locally for 50€, so am certainly tempted, as you say it is a looker. Then again I have a pile of six vintage TVs, including two of that vintage, awaiting work....

There is a certain collectors market here, but nowhere near as developed as the UK.

Thanks also to the rest for the comments. If I take the plunge and make an offer on it, I will let you know!

Edit: the ad seems to have disappeared. There is another identical set for sale, but for three times the price and the other side of the country. At least now I know that model's one to look out for and that they clearly made a few of 'em!

Hi,
Most italian, american and british TV sets came in parts into Spain.
There was a spanish company who did the assembly.
The reason was that is that Spain had heavy taxes and Franco wanted labor for
his workers.
Telefunken had its own plant in Spain, since the 30s which goes back on
the friendship between Spain and Germany.
Different countries had export versions of their home production to sell
them in Spain.
These sets were "aligned" in style and technology to the spanish market.
All these sets have a tag inside, naming the number of valves, the permission
number and the name of the spanish assembler company.

Another sign for these export TV sets sold in Spain are the dual languages
on the back with safety informations, and sometimes on the front panel
to explain the controls.

I am hooked on export TV sets from around the world, I am just working
on a spanish Admiral made in the late 50s.

Problem in Spain is the poor quality of the schematics, as far they were offered!

Regards,
German Dalek

Thanks for the information, GD. In Spain it is quite common to find vintage imported/assembled TVs. Even US makes like Zenith crop up, possibly due to the US air bases and commercial agreements during the dictatorship.
I have a 60s Italian Fercu set with the 'hispano-italiano TV company' emblazoned on the back panel!

The Telefunken TV factory used to be just down the road from me too. Sadly closed when Thomson took over.

Yes, Italy and Spain were the only countries in Europe where
the USA could sell TV sets in reasonable numbers.
The sets were offered in newspapers and TV guides with commercials.

However Spain had an own interesting TV industry and I have a nice
collection of their 50s/60s stuff.
Completly unknown outside Spain but worth to collect and keeping.

German Dalek

Some people on Flickr have put old brochure scans online from various countries.
