Hi to all,
Hi MartinMarris,

Interesting dual culture upbringing !

On the French TV forum, we're a bunch of guys working on reproducing true 819 resolution without the limitations of the Aurora 625 to 819 conversion.
We use high-res media images as sources to VGA conversion then creating a Y video signal.
Other avenues include a RaspBerry Pi 4 and the HackRF generator for VHF signals.

This is a work in progress. Project aims to create a list of necessary hardware + all software files to achieve an easy to reproduce final setup any 819 afficionado can reproduce.

On page 15 here, some first 819 images viewed on a Sony TV9-90M 819/625 B&W TV.
OK, not the best for hi-def pictures !
Soon to come, tests with a larger screen 17 or 19" B&W 819 TV.

PS : members are having problems sourcing a USB to VGA adapter using the Fresco FL2000 chipset. Newer ones use a MacroSilicon chipset which is not compatible.
Other solutions are under investigation...

Thank you very much, I have just read almost the whole thread. Luckily I am still bilingual! Until now I did not realise that the Aurora solution cannot do justice to 819 lines, and that it is surprisingly difficult to get a solution for that issue. In addition, there is the difficulty obtaining video source material in true 819 lines, partly because from about 1975, TF1 was actually using a 625-line production system and up-converting to 819 lines. Very interesting to see the various solutions explained in that thread.

I love the screenshots of the famous clock from the 1ère chaine!

Smile Re: Continental Television Receivers

Hi,
I found this Teleavia 439T 17" 819 lines set dumped by the poubelles on the edge of our village a few years ago.
It's in a bit of a state and may have been partly submerged in water for a while.
It has a beefy mains transformer to cope with the then national voltage of 110, but selectable for 210 or 230 volts, and 'E' series valves. The full wave rectifier consists of two EY82s. I've never seen those before.
I doubt I'll ever do anything with it, but felt it should be saved. The heaters light, and there's a very faint line whistle (I think).
Cheers, Pete.

Hi to all,
Hi Tractorfan,

to encourage you to tackle the Teleavia, the schematic is here :
https://archives.doctsf.com/document...?num_doc=28244

Free download, no strings attached !

It could probably be easily converted to 625 scan, a lot of TVs were converted to dual-standard 819/625 when the second channel launched on UHF in 1964 (like your BBC2).

BTW, the docTSF web site has a huge database of vintage radios, TVs, tape recorders.
Spans from the 1920's to today. Lots of French brands of course but also Sony, Sangean, German electronics, etc. Forum members can add schematics, photos, etc. very easily to continuously enrich the database.

Search by brand/model/maker :
https://archives.doctsf.com/document...p?num_serie=56

General knowledge database main directory :
https://archives.doctsf.com/document...hp?num_serie=4

The two main vintage electronics forums (retro-forum & docTSF) are in the process of merging in the near future once the process of fusing the TeraBytes of accumulated data is complete.

Here are a couple of pics of some real sets in my possession.

The Schneider purchase involved quite a long car journey not long after we moved to France. I am guessing it is mid to late fifties in age. Cost around 20 - 30€ as I can't remember the exact price now.

The Grammont - in rather a sorry state with missing back and loudspeaker was bought at a Brocante here in our village for 30€.

The Ribet Desjardins dual standard 625/819 line set was bought at another Brocante. It is a bit scruffy and missing a cabinet foot/leg. I don't know what year it is. Again cost 30€

Finally a Beovision 7700 obtained in Scotland before we moved. It was destined for the recycling centre. It came with a substantial remote control (metal) and when last powered up gave a very good picture.

If anyone wishes to see anymore period advertising pics of French TVs just ask.

Andy

Teleavia has always been French and its most well known model is this one from 1957:-

Originally the name Teleavia comes from the fact that it was a division of a group making professional electronics, mainly for aviation. They had also a division making domestic appliances (mainly fridges) under the brand "Frigeavia".
