Dansette covering? - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Has anyone recovered a Dansette with the pink shade Rexine material and is it, or a similar covering available? Or has anyone painted the original ?

No not that colour only Red/Cream and Blue/Cream.

Sorry I should have added I used to get my Rexine from Retrospective, which I think still supply it.

Ohh this is something I am keen to know about! You mentioned painting rexine. Has anyone done this and can they recommend a type of paint/dye? My dansette tempo is badly stained and I think it could do with a light coat of something.

I have never painted a Dansette, other forum folk may have, it is worth you doing a search, on this forum, as the topic of cleaning Rexine has been extensively discussed.

I haven't painted the covering on a record player but I remember many years ago painting an odd colour vinyl car seat with a paint especially made to stick well to that sort of material and that didn't come off in all the time I had it.

I had a quick look on eBay and amazingly enough there still seems to be similar types of product.

Here you go! I painted this Ferguson a couple of years ago and never posted about it. It was very easy and fun, took two or three coats before I was satisfied.

I've used paint and the leather coating/stain. Tried the paint with a brush but not happy as it became uneven due to quick drying so used a small gloss paint roller and got good results. Apply thin coats otherwise the grain pattern will get clogged.

The leather restorer, used also with a small roller, gave the best finish as you can go over several times to get an even coating. I gave that one 3 thin coats allowing several days between coats. It retains that 'soft' touch and pattern of new Rexine.
All the surface should be very clean before starting as it will contain grease from hands etc.

Amazing info, sounds great! It's something I wouldn't usually do it's just the staining is bound cleaning!

Can you still get Meltonian stuff? It really does/did work a treat on these leather effect finishes.

2 Photo examples. One with the plain knobs is painted with satin flame red paint and a cream, although it looks white, emulsion and the other is red Leather restorer and the cream left original

As I said in my other post I have never painted a Dansette, this is one with new Rexine I did some time ago.

The Rexine on the two in the pictures was generally good. One had a few small patches of missing Rexine and I did consider stripping the old off and re-covering but instead used a mix of filler and PVA to fill the gaps and whilst still slightly tacky used an offcut of Rexine to impress the pattern. I looked yesterday when I took the photos and can't see the patches. The other was badly faded and almost see-through on one side with the cloth backing clearly visible so painting and getting a texture with a roller seemed the best way to go. I think the Leather treatment one looks slightly better and 'feels' like Rexine.

Hi All,

I was searching for info about Dansette cosmetics and found this thread.

My understanding is the Rexine material is the faux leather effect stuff. My 1963 Dansette Bermuda (cream & teal) is covered with something more akin to a linen cloth. Very thin, a clear cross weave material with a sort of coating. Please see attached photo which I hope shows what I mean.

The only suppliers of Dansette coverings I have found anywhere seem to stock only the faux leather style material.

Can anyone identify this covering material? BTW I have seen several Bermudas online which are covered with the same style of material in cream & orange as well.

As ever from the fab people on this forum, any advice very welcome.
