Default Murphy A362 in shop in Bath

Spotted today in “Community Matters” charity shop, Chelsea Rd. Bath. Looks to be in reasonable nick, with all knobs and back. Although it was rather difficult to see inside it, insides and valves seem to be present.
£30 For display only( cord cut off) so hurry before some wally buys it and “upcycles” it.

I was given a faulty one of these as a lad, but it was beyond my capabilities at the time so I seen to remember I scrapped it.

Just twiddled the title in case someone thinks you've taken a holistic approach to cleaning.

Nice to see a set in a charity shop. But wouldn't it need to be PAT tested? Maybe it was and it passed...

Post #1 says display only and lead cut off.

Just restored one of these, a nice little retro set, with the advantage of having a VHF wave band.
Obviously chopped the mains lead off to cover their
I think £30 is top money though .

True, but when it's in a good cause, I sometimes give in.

I have the 372 version, if you like the challenge of restoration then £30 is good value for money as you'll have many hours of fun changing hunt capacitors which are very well hidden and difficult to get at.

Worth persevering as they look good and perform well on FM.

Must be a recent new item on display as I was only in that very shop Tuesday of last week and it wasn't there.

I was in that shop on Saturday, it was there then. I like the stuff in there, but it is all too expensive. I usually cover all of Bath's charity shops every week. Radios are hard to find in charity shops these days so it is nice to see this one.

I bought this radio on Feb 25th as it was handsome, it was my birthday and money for a good cause! As a very occasional Forum visitor, I was unaware of local keen-eyed enthusiasts who had already spotted Bakelite Murphy. I was pleased to find the the knobs all work and the radio appears unaltered. Out of curiosity I removed the back and saw years of dust, probably going back to 1955, some of which I removed, so the valves are now shiny. My technical knowledge is minimal, so there is no way I could investigate the works. I suppose I could attach a lead to use the speaker; would this be 8 ohms? I’m curious about the text on the rear cover referring to transit screws which should be loosened before use. What are these and why? I understand the use of these on record turntables and would welcome any comments or suggestions. Steve.

It says "chassis fixing screws" - I don't have an A362 now, but there's a nice set of high definition photos at

https://www.snellingsmuseum.co.uk/ar...io/murphy-a362 .

So I think it must refer to the large bolts at each end of the chassis which secure it to the case moulding, and the only likely reason that occurs to me for loosening them is to help prevent microphony - having the chassis floating on rubber bushes should dampen any effects of audio-frequency vibration on the valves.
