Logie Baird vertical reel-to-reel tape recorder
I have a Vertical reel-to-reel Tape-recorder, with a nice John Logie Baird badge on it, that I bought second-hand for 19 guineas in 1955.
It uses standard ΒΌ inch tape, 2-track, has a microphone stored in the back of the hefty box, which is covered with imitation leather. The amplifier is valve-driven of course; the reels are mounted vertically which is unusual now, but I think common in very early days. It has been in my garage for ~30 years and I'm clearing out. I have offered it to the Manchester Science & Technology Museum, but no answer yet. If that continues to be the case, has anyone any suggestions for what to do with it? Otherwise it will just go in the skip. |

That sounds like an interesting machine.
If you post in the Sets, Parts and Service Information Offered section (with it marked either free or offered for an exact price) I feel sure that someone would offer it a home. https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...splay.php?f=27 |

Sounds like the Scophony-Baird. There are two versions, the earliest using octal valves and the later using the 40 series. More info here:

I think it's been mentioned elsewhere but isn't this the machine seen in the Norman Wisdom film 'Trouble in Store'?

Hi Keith
I'm very local to you (Whalley Range). If MOSI don't get back to you and no-one else here has a better idea, send me a PM if you want to save it from the skip. cheers Mark
