Default Roberts Radio RP4 Cabinet uplift

I am just about to start work on reviving this radio and I would like to give the cabinet a bit of an uplift whilst retaining its beauty marks that it has acquired during its life.

My first idea is to use some kind of black polish but I would prefer, if possible, to use a previously tried and method!

Cheers

John
