Default Cleaning Cossor 501 Dial Glass

I have a dial glass that could do with some cleaning, however Im scared to try in case the lettering disappears, since some of the paints used come away with water,I had a bad experience some years back?
I have another where the all red letting is brurred where the paint has spread, would this be due to someone cleaning it, since the dial is fairly clean.

I have had sets where i don't trust the print, so have cleaned round the print with a cotton bud dampened in window cleaning spray, it takes a steady hand & patience
