Smile Ferranti Nova

Hi all,
Bought this set as a "total wreck", at a local market for a fiver; It had big lumps missing from the bakelite cabinet and white bakelite surround. The chassis was complete however so I thought I would have a go at repair with car body fillers and car spray gun.
I think it's not looking bad for a fiver?
Just the chassis to restore now and job's a goodun.
Paul.

Excellent job
If the chassis comes up as well as the case, you will have a real result for a fiver!
I have had good results using car filler, fixed a dropped bush dac10 a couple of years ago, to the delight of it's owner.

Hi,
I use a professional spray system with an air compressor and devilbiss spray gun. I mixed a matt brown an matt black until it spray matched on a test bit of scrap material (when dry). I then sprayed the whole cabinet about 12 times drying between each coat. I find that the thinner the coat the better the end result
Took two days.
Paul.

A bargain for £5 if the chassis is complete. Very lucky. Hope it goes well, good to know the radio is being saved.
I hope the tuning dial is in good condition.

Hi,
Yes thanks. The dial is fine and the chassis is all complete, just very dirty and in need of a good clean and new capacitors. Laid low with a bit of a summer cold just now but will get started on it when feeling better.

Great job! I would've never known it was in pieces unless you showed me the repairs.

It is indeed amazing what a bit of filler and glue will do. I couldn't see any evidence of the repair on the outside of the cabinet. I bet you soon have that chassis off the bench and back in to the set
Thanks for the guided tour by the way!

Hi Paul, You've done a lovely job and saved a nice wireless. It's a credit to your determination. A fiver well spent. Well thinned paint does give a better finish. I stopped using my traditional spray guns due to the amount of overspray and wasted paint going into the atmosphere; I've now got an HVLP gun (high volume low pressure) and this works very well straight off my compressor using the standard hose; the gun cost £50 new but I've since seen the same gun at £35. A good investment given the cost of paint. Hope you feel better soon. Col.

Thumbs up Re: Ferranti Nova

Hi all,
Thanks for the good comments on this one. I am just about
finished this one and it's back in the cabinet and playing very well for a "short", superhet.
Just one or two things to tidy up and it can go
in the sitting room (Her indoors fell in love with it when she saw the two tone cabinet)
Photos here for perusal.
Paul.
