Using an RPN calculator, much easier (than algerbraic ones), why are they so expensive these days? On the plus side I have never had one 'lost' at work (not for long anyway, probably works out cheaper in the long term).

I didn't even know you could still get RPN calculators! My HP11Cs are lasting well and my HP45 is stashed away.

There was a time when people wouldn't go near that new-fangled Electrickery, or tried to use a match. Bring back gas lighting. It's all relative!

Listening to locate the two edit points on a reel to reel tape, marking at the head with a chinagraph pencil, placing tape in edit block, make two cuts, line up and rejoin the two ends with splicing tab, remove from block, respool, listen back to the perfect edit resulting.

Ha! My mate Bob was a splicing wizard, invisible edits every time! I always got it slightly out. However, I was the champion with 'pause control edits' and 90% of my efforts were undetectable. I may still have my EMI splicing block somewhere, almost unused.....

I can manage 7 of eight..............my splices were never perfect(even though I had a "professional" editing block)

We did that on our BBC 'A' course, and were tested on it, even though we were trainee transmitter engineers at the 'blunt' end, as it were. Some blood was spilt by one or two.

The chap who instructed us 'doctored' an innocuous sounding news bulletin into something completely and utterly different, with a few deft cuts and some splicing, such that one would never quite trust again what was heard on air.

What about driving a TRF receiver? I say driving because you have to do several things at once.

Spelling and grammar!

"You will need to spend some time learning this", not "you will need to spend sometime learning this."

"With regard to", not "with regards to"

"The items are all ready for collection", not "the items are already for collection"

Dare I mention split infinitives? No, they are probably too contraversial!

Go on, someone's got to boldly go there.

While I'm at it, never use a preposition to end a sentence with.

Folks hardly ever seem to brew up with real tea leaves in proper tea pots these days preferring to drown a tea bag in a mug full of warm milky water instead.

One that constantly amazes me considering that we are a nation of tea drinkers

Steve.

Hiring an L.T. accumulator from the local radio shop (and taking it back for recharging).

... or start every sentence with "Basically" and scatter "like" all over the place.

One bit of forgotten knowledge was having a "Penmanship" class in junior school. Our headmaster managed to get Osmiroid fountain pens at a reduced price for those who wanted them. Mine needed a left-handed oblique nib as I'm left handed.

I was quite decent at calligraphy, but not now!
Before the computer era I hand-wrote all my "Television" articles, and JRW was quite impressed that he could read every word.
