Default Tim Hunkin [Secret Life of Machines] has a new series!

I was very pleasantly surprised this morning to read that:

Quote:
The Secret Life of Machines alum Tim Hunkin is set to unveil a new web series focusing on explaining basic components, called The Secret Life of Components. Each roughly 45 minute episode will focus on a different technology, from glue to switches to bearings and more.
(source: Make).

I'm sure many members here will be already aware of Hunkin's late-1980s / early-1990s series The Secret Life of Machines, where Hunkin and co-presenter Rex Garrod explain the history and inner-workings of common household appliances (VCR, washing machine, telephone, etc...)

The first episode is set to be released next week (March 4th) - I'll be looking forward to it!

Brilliant! I still think that the original series should be part of the national curriculum. How to have fun learning about real stuff (as we all do here!).

That's super! He's a great engineer, with a sense of humour too. Hoping for lots of his animated cartoons!

Thanks for mentioning this Andrew.
I used to use his material for training sessions at work.
Tim is an interesting presenter.

Took the family to a Christmas 'Secret Life of Machines' lecture at the IEE in London given by Tim in 1991. A great presenter, so looking forward to this new series.

Wow, I never knew about this (and can't find anything online). Was it a "repeat" of an appliance covered in the TV series, or something else?

Thanks for sharing the news. I have just been re-watching some of the original episodes on youtube. Harks back to simpler times on tv!

Thank you. A most enjoyable watch. Hopefully, I am now more knowledgable about chains and belts.

Utterly, utterly brilliant.

I liked the new take on that Belgian statue, and he's clearly not afraid of the piranha in the Amazon. A nice mixture of some good tips and some good humour.

I thought it was an outstanding series! Looked forward to see it every time it was aired. It was on the Discovery Channel, a US cable channel.
Sorry to hear about the passing of Rex Garrod. They were an unbeatable pair, he and Tim!

I have just watched it, it was a joy. I have all the original series on my media server and watch one or two upon occasion. The sheer enthusiasm and lets make something attitude of all the programmes does make them a bit special. I have said before that they (the old series, now add the new) should be part of the national curriculum. You can have lots of fun with engineering and even a little understanding makes life easier and more fun.

I do enjoy explaining things to the interested (it's the "how sad is that" brigade who are using the latest tech. that gets my goat). Not that it has had much use over the past year, I still carry a few bits of paper and/or a notebook and a pen* to sketch stuff, either for myself or "the interested".

*disposable fountain type, very good indeed and work out cheaper than cartridges per unit of line length.

It was an absolute joy. Looking forward to the next one.

Like many, I watched the series originally, and have watched them on-and-off over the years.

I tend to struggle with most youtube videos, and rarely watch anything on there, so this was a delight.
I would rather read a book with a 1000 pages than watch a ten-minute youtube video; I find them very frustrating.

Most youtubers seem the love the sound of their own voice, and tend to use as many words as possible, and end up saying very little.
