Default A call to spy, Netflix

Came across a very interesting film this evening on Netflix, A call to spy, about the extremely brave ladies who were working for SOE in France setting up resistance networks.
The wireless interest was the use of CR100 receivers in London taking messages in CW of course, and what I take to be type 123 spy sets in use in the field.

Worth watching.

Mk 123 came later. Perhaps B2?

Both the one finger and two finger techniques were used to tap out messages in Morse.

Poking away at the top of the key knob... either of those methods would get a right telling-off during training.

You grab the knob and send by moving your hand, pressing it down and lifting it. You'll see many keys are a knob above a 'biscuit' sort of style. You grip the stem of the knob and the knob rests on your fingers and your fingers rest on the biscuit, the index finger loops over the top. The spring on the key is essentially just to stop the key falling down when you let go.

Getting a carefully developed grip and keying style is the way to avoid an RSI usually called 'glass elbow'

I remember someone saying the composer of the Inspector Morse theme had a glass elbow as it actually says T-T-O-R-S-E.

I think Barrington Pheloung did rather better than that. To my ear the inter-element (dot or dash) spacing and inter-character spacing is good, (1 dot and 3 dots respectively), as is the dash to dot length ratio (3:1).

If there is anything wrong it's the inter-word spacing which should be 7 dots, but it's more like 3, so what is being sent is "MORSEMORSEMORSE"

Given the constraints of the brief, he created a remarkable piece with minimal "poetic licence". One of my favourite TV themes.
