Default Waltham STM45 to Sony LBT-D705

I am really new to audio equipment and still have heaps to learn but I love the trouble shooting aspect of working through the problems that old audio equipment often has.

My interest started with the Waltham STM45 Music Centre I picked up as a non runner. I stripped everything down, giving it a good clean on the way and checking the electronics over. It all started as a bit of a challenge for me to see if I could fix it, and it turned out great. Used it for over a year, and it became a bit of a centre piece as you don't see old units like this often.

I was then offered the Sony LBT-D705 for a price I couldn't refuse. It was dead on arrival, but I worked through each unit fully restoring it, and this is now my main system. It is paired up with a couple of basic low-spec Sony speakers that I would like to eventually upgrade.

Well done. You will find that better speakers will dramatically improve the sound.

Thank you.

Are there any particular speakers you think I should avoid?

You should avoid low-sensitivity speakers - for example that have a sensitivity lower than 89/90dB.
