Default Grundig TK 1 Stowage Area ?

Does anybody know what the area (about 20mm deep) above the speaker grille is for, signal cable or microphone stowage possibly ?

Looks like originally there was some foam lining the bottom.

Found this photo which might indicate that it is for microphone stowage.

Found a 1961 review from Tape Recording UK magazine where it is referred to as the microphone recess.

One review niggle was that the recess is not large eough to accomodate the microphone and its cable.
