Default "Retro" Radios

Anyone got any pics of one of those?

There was also a rather nice downsized Philips 634A.

And I recall Tudor Rees had something specially made available.

Which brings me to show my own retro set. I was making and selling these in the late 1980s.

This was called the 'Harmony' - LW/MW/FM - and was available in a variety of guises... see pics. It had a colourful back-lit dial. It was based around a transistorised chassis but had a whacking great C (and R) across the power supply to give an "artificial warm-up" effect! It had an MDF cabinet, quite small, and did sound rather nice.

I can take you one but I'd have to dig mine out first! It's buried in the box room. I got it for Christmas in -oohhh... 1983-ish. It actually sounds rather nice and does look the biz. The knobs maybe too small, but there's only two of them. It's not OTT like some fake-ups are.

The PCB is a bit rough around the edges if you poke about inside.

Did anyone ever experience the "Spirit of St. Louis" retro-radios designed to look like something that might have been used on a 1920s aircraft but inside was just a boring MW/LW radio?

https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/sosl_field_radio.html

I got to fix one after someone had let the batteries leak. Typical cheap-tat construction inside.

Actually, mine isn't a Steepletone after all! I remember it was bought in Atkinson's Radio and TV in Workington (small, independent business no longer there) and is an unbranded model, made in Romania. Needs a new dial lamp and knob.

Here're some pics. The set is scaled by the Fluke 25 multimeter adjacent.

Good pics!

I was once handed a retro "634A" for cabinet restoration. I found it had veneers that were very soft and fragile.
