Default Amberley Museum Visit

Yesterday I visited the Amberley Museum which I thoroughly enjoyed. The museum has had a few name variations over the years including Amberley Chalk Pits.

Museum web link - https://www.amberleymuseum.co.uk/

Museum map - https://www.amberleymuseum.co.uk/museum-map/

It is an open air museum on a large site on the outskirts of the lovely village of Amberley, just north of Arundel, less than 10 miles from where I live.

It covers Heritage, Transport, Engineering and Craft etc, is manned by a large number of helpful and knowledgeable volunteers, some demonstrating crafts.

Fair bit of walking involved to see all the site, some of it somewhat uphill, there are also nature trail walks one can do. There is a narrow gauge train (which I went on) that goes end to end of the site and normally a vintage bus but no bus at the moment due to Covid.

I have visited Amberley many times before, but never been to the Museum until now. Had heard of the museum but did not really know anything about it. Around a week ago read some old Forum Threads which mentioned it, particularly its excellent vintage TV and Radio exhibition.

Really enjoyed the vintage TV & Radio section and very happy to also see there quite few tape recorders. Also particularly liked the Telephone Exchange, Electricity Hall & BT Connected Earth amongst many others.

Can well recommend it to people.

On Monday my wife went to the funeral of one of her Aunts. Her Aunt's late husband worked in the old family bicycle shop in Littlehampton B.C Floyd, his father Bertie Floyd owned the shop. At Amberley they have recreated the original shop with many of its original bikes and bike equipment so it was extra interesting for me to visit the shop.

I must make the effort to visit one of these days, been past it on many occasions when down that way. I believe they have a Murphy A52 among their souvenirs (swine!)

I can add that I enjoyed the one occasion I visited the museum a couple of years ago on the occasion of a Telephone Heritage Group event held there, although I felt that one visit didn't do it justice. Unfortunately, it's rather a long way for me to travel to get there.

Been a few times and even before they had the radio end down there.Used to go when Ron Ham was around,a great character also was there when Geoff Arnold opened up something.
The Radio days back then were superb. It was a special day every year plus ditto for many other interests.

Great photos David and [as you suggest] much more to see than just the impressive radio section which used to involve a sort of Club House [like the one at Newhaven Fort] when I visited "Chalk Pits" over a decade or now. Given the amount to get round, the tickets meant you could return for a second day. Does that still apply? Has it become more corporate like so many organisations these days? As I'm between Sussex and Lancashire [normally] I should go more often I suppose! Events though

There was no mention of being able to revisit for a second day Dave, I will double check on that as I would like to go back and look at some things more.

I did not find it corporate at all, exactly the opposite.

There is no mention on the web page of tickets being valid for more than one visit.

Also famous of course for the final scenes in James Bond's 'A view to a kill'.

Ask about Gift Aiding your ticket price. For places set up for this, this will entail a 10% or more supplement, in return for which the ticket will be valid more than once.

Thanks David for taking the trouble to post your photographs and description; it's especially intersting for those of us who are too far away to get there easily, even in normal times.

After a bit of sleuthing, the Amberley museum has a replica of Marcuse's radio shack. I think the RSGB keeps some of his original gear.

I used to be a volunteer at the radio exhibit years ago. Nice to see it again. Nothing much has changed.

Thanks very much for drawing attention to this, I was unaware of this place and it looks very interesting. We have friends that live in Worthing so next time were down that way we will certainly pay the museum a visit.

Copied from the website.

From the 1840s to the 1960s, this chalk quarry would have reverberated to the noises of explosions, furnace blasts, rumbling trucks, trains, and horses. Since Roman times, chalk has been regarded as valuable source material for fertiliser and mortar, cement and concrete. Chalk was quarried here in two main quarries, the grey and the white. It was then heated in kilns with coal to create quicklime, The quicklime was then hydrated by adding water in a lively chemical reaction, and this made the final product, hydrated lime, which could be bagged and transported.

Originally several lime producers operated at the site, but by 1876 the Pepper family were the sole producers, employed over 80 people.

There are several sets of kilns of different designs around the museum, the largest of which are the de Witt Kilns, with 18 firing chambers, at the end of the museum. You can see the rail tracks that took lime directly to the kilns, and the lime pits used to add water to the quicklime.

A Heritage Lottery Grant has funded an exhibition next to the de Witt Kilns that shows the working life of local people at the chalk pits. As you walk around the museum, look at the many buildings that made up the quarry. At the entrance, you’ll see the station goods yard and bagging sheds. Nearby are the offices and barn, a smithy and the locomotive shed.
