I managed to disengage a bit sooner than expected so, here's something to try, my first attempt at loading and holding a full screen image on the VDU using only the original RAM (0F00-0FFF), extra RAM (0B00-0BFF) and I/O RAM (0880-08FF) - all three are needed.

The code does not include whatever is needed to switch the VDU off during loading and on again afterwards, you can either add that yourself or just manually disable the VDU with a wire link, upload the code (which auto runs) and re-enable the VDU with a wire link.

The .asm and .hex files are attached in a .zip file.

For the purposes of dramatic tension, I will not say what the image actually is.
