Going back to your post #12 regarding the Sony, I'd find it odd that the tube has failed after storage. Much more likely is Tony's suggestion of a decoupling capacitor.
Of course the tubes in these were pretty short lived so it's likely the repairer said it's not worth repair as when it's done the picture will be poor anyway. Worth keeping the set though.
