Hi Steve,

As system A says, its almost certainly the loading belt, specially if its ok from cold. When it starts to fail it just misses that last little bit of torque needed to close the mode switch. Bit of a sod to change from what I remember. Before removing the loading motor use some elaccy bands or summat to hold the guides in the unlaced position, else you run the risk of the loading rings jumping free and losing the mech timing.
