More seriously, there were lots of nonstandard mains sockets around at the time you're talking about. The 13A mains socket rapidly became standard in commercial premises after WW2, but many buildings had separate ring mains for things like floor polishers and vacuum cleaners. It was considered desirable to keep these appliances off the 'standard' supply - maybe it still is.
