To this day I still much prefer BASIC for knocking up little problem solvers like that, although I usually use QBASIC which a couple of my Win 98 machines have on.

Python should be the modern equivalent but it's just weird enough to send me running back into the soothing embrace of BASIC whenever I get stuck. I only persevere with Python if I'm writing something which someone else might need to be able to run.
