I'd never analyzed it so deeply before but yes, my train set and Scalextric would have introduced me to concepts like
Circuits
Polarity
Contact resistance
Radio & Television interference
Overload protection

The controllers introduced me to
Rheostats,
Even the lamp-limiter, for goodness sake!
(Mine was an A3 Power Controller like this)
