Totally agree - a meter that bleeps for continuity (or a similar home made device), plus a couple of needle sharp probes to puncture the print will save you hours of tracing the print. Also get some really fine tinned insulated wire and some hot melt to secure the wires. With care the job can look quite tidy. A little Araldite or UV cure glue on the upperside will help reinforce the board.
