At the risk of labouring the point, you need to remove that cleaner roller assembly completely. Even when the foam is in good condition, it is like using the same q-tip to clean your ears with for your whole life. They end up re-depositing dirt onto the drum.
That foam will deteriorate sooner rather than later, I have seen that sticky mess wreck tapes and, on a few occasions, destroy the heads on the drum. If I were you I'd do your friend a favour and get rid, as 'pre-emptive maintenance'.

I have a Sony SLV-E730UX which is a slightly earlier design. I was wondering how easy it was to remove to remove the head cleaner. I've downloaded the service manual but it only shows the play mechanism after a fair amount of earlier disassembly.
