At least open it up, clean the lens with a Q tip and some IPA, order some small drive belts or o rings online for the drawer then try a CD. At least you'll be able to ascertain if the laser comes on (obviously never look directly into it).
Anything more serious than the above is likely to be trickier and need a scope and service docs, but let's not jump the gun!
