Fortunately it's not electric as I straddle it every day... I think the crackle you're hearing might be the wind whipping around my cheap compact camera, there is noise from the the radio as well but it's more of a white noise hiss.

So I checked it but it wasn't dirty, at least I've now given the contacts a good polish and lube so it'll be good for another 40 years If I can fix it, I still haven't checked the electrolytics out of circuit, there's one decoupling the IF stages, that's next I think.
