Dave, a telescopic aerial is actually *less* likely to be useful on LW. If the aerial isn't completely cosmetic, it may have been added for SW use. These radios often covered BC and SW in markets where LW wasn't used.

The HK manufacturers were very focussed on the UK market in the 60s and early 70s though - it was the only significant part of the British Empire left then, and 1997 seemed a long way into the future.
