Ok, update on this if useful for others. I have successfully repaired the top to a good standard!

1: Rubbed down top with white spirits and wire wool
2: Wiped off excess white spirit and left to dry
3: Poured on a small pool of Danish oil and wipe over along the grain
4: After 20 mins lightly buffed with a microfibre cloth and that's it!

I am quite pleased with the result!
