I'd recommend that you search through posts made by 'Retired' (a.k.a. Colin of Huddersfield) on the general topic of cabinet repairs/restoration. Not only are these of enormous practical help, his style of writing makes for a thoroughly enjoyable read
I've gone down the same route with a Pye BB - I used paint stripper and fine sandpaper after which I applied Danish oil (two coats, six weeks/a fine sanding between them). It awaits the overhaul of the deck/amplifier (and has been so for the last four years!
