Having ascertained the physical problem described above, I haven't really looked any further, but...

I don't think the fault is inherent, as I have since acquired a further Vanguard 10E which works without problems, though a previous owner may well have applied an effective kludge like I described - I haven't dared open up the 'phone in case by doing so I introduce a similar fault.
