Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
That was common when I was a lad, wall sockets were a lot rarer.
You could get a Y bayonet adapter to plug into the light socket so you have the lamp in and a spare socket for appliances. We never thought of the danger of electricity in those days and 3 pin sockets with an earth connection only came along later. Oh dear; showing my age. |

Here are a couple of TV's I spotted on Some Mother's De Ave Em.
The first looks like an Indeset, probably chose to fit in with the house of the future. The second is a Baird using a Thorn 1500 chassis going by the controls, so probably somewhere in the 88xx range. |
Re: Technology related anachronisms on TV and in films etc.
In Passport To Pimlico there are quite a few period radios on display, along with some spoofs of Home Service announcements.
No televisions to be seen but quite a few Band I aerials in view. |

The nearest I could find is a DER 5807, with the controls in the same place. https://www.radios-tv.co.uk/wp-conte...08/derbw-2.jpg |

Three snapshots from Yes Prime Minister, the first & third are Pyes, possibly the same model (& indeed the same set, but used in different episodes), the second seemed to be an ITT.
|
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
Think the 1st and 3rd would be a Dynatron, renowned for their expensive up market cabinets.
|
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
The middle one's definitely an ITT, used to service them before I quit the TV servicing game....I've fully recovered now.
Lawrence. |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
The set in the first and last pictures is a PYE fitted into one of those posh cabinets that furniture shops sold. The clue is that you can see through it at the top. I can almost read the PYE logo on the front which is why I knew it wasn't a Philips version. K40 or KT4 depending on the screen size...
|
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
The middle one was badged/labelled on the front as 'ITT trimline' cannot remember the model number or the chassis, might have been CV 1100 series ?, we sold a few ex-rental versions as "cheapies".
1 and 3 look like K40/KT4 chassis, or maybe a K35, PYE versions of course. |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
The film 'Judy' has a Thorn 1591 (14" version) on a shelf, but not working.

HMV 904/5 featured in film 'Here Comes the Sun.
This afternoon did anyone watch the film 'Here Comes the Sun' with Budd Flanagan and Chesney Allen. It was made in 1946 and showed in close up a 1938 EMI 904/5 television/radio.
I have never actually seen a pre war television in a period film. They turned on the radio, great shots. John. |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
Thanks for this John. I see this film is next repeated on Talking Pictures TV on Fri 18th October at 6:00 am. I'll be sure to set my recorder!
Steve |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
Talking pictures often shows some great period pieces.
The Six-Five Special film has a "portable" valve radio & some good shots of studio equipment, but no actual TVs. |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
Way back in the late 60's I watched an episode of ‘The Saint’ where a pair of Sinclair Micro 6’s were being ‘used’ as Walkie-talkies, IIRC with a world wide range.

I've heard about that episode, but not seen it.

Probably doesn't qualify as a vintage radio, but it does look interesting ... in the final Harry Potter film I'm just watching again.

Wasn't that "The Avengers" rather than "The Saint"? ISTR they were the later Micromatic model. |

Here are some screen grabs, including one from the film of a wireless. Although the film is billed everywhere as dating from 1946, the opening credits state 1945. So maybe this set was actually filmed right at the end of the war. Which control knob is Bud Flanagan operating? Steve |

the curved rather than stepped cabinet top indicates it is a Marconi 707. Great screen grabs by the way :) Cheers Andy |

Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
I remember muttering at the time that it was a load of rubbish and why couldn't they at least have used something mocked up for the programme rather than a recognisable piece of domestic kit.
There's only so much one can do regarding suspension of disbelief ;D (Don't get me started on Wallace and Gromit's A35 van with WIND UP windows!) |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
Am I missing something? surely A35 vans did?
I remember watching Space 1999 as a kid and thinking that the Black and White CRT sets used as monitors was a bit crap They would have at least been colour in 1999 and probably just a screen rather than something that looked like an ordinary portable TV set of the current time... 1975 ish? The special effects were also a bit 'Michael Bentine's potty time'... |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
Dr Who occasionally used off the shelf items for props, but considering the budget was much lower than The Avengers & The Saint it was understandable.
|
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
A35 Vans did have wind-up windows-I used to work with someone who owned one many years ago. Minis (Saloon and van versions), on the other hand had sliding windows.
|
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
I can't remember the Austin A30 or A35 having wind-up windows.
They had a balanced drop-glass, worked by an oblong glass 'handle', glued to the top of the glass. It used to fall off, and an after-market S shaped handle was produced ( by Barnacle, I think) to replace it. You had to remember to lock the window by pushing the inside handle forwards, before you got out. The door key only locked the door handle, not the window. |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
Back on topic please.
|
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
I remember an old episode of Dr.Who where The Doctor used what looked to me like a Heathkit GDO as some sort of weapon to ward off an attacking alien lifeform.
|
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
Thank you, Brigham. I owned several, cars and vans. 8-)
I was also, getting back on topic(ish) once the proud owner of a Benkson tape recorder as featured in the space station control panel of Thunderbird 5 ;D |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
So that's what it is!
You could open a separate topic on 'gear' used in Thunderbirds. I loved spotting 'known' items, often Airfix or Lucas parts. My favourite was the (seemingly) huge Friedland bell-push which Brains uses to stop the runaway train in "Brink of Disaster". |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
The BBC used a lot of off the shelf props for Dr Who, Blake's 7 & other science fiction programmes.

here are three stills taken from "The Prisoner" episode Hammer into Anvil showing a Bush SRP31D. The third one shows the name Bush in the lid has been covered over and with a very careful camera shot the Bush badge on the front of the RP can't be seen though a little of it is still observable

Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
May I ask a a question please? What is the make and model of the tape recorder in the opening titles of ‘The human jungle’ ?

There's something Garrard SP25 about it. "Music begins where words leave off". |

G6Tanuki yes is it an SP25 I think a mk1 though am not sure.
Attached is another still from "The Prisoner" this time the episode "the Girl who was Death". Taken from the scene where No 6 is beneath the lighthouse it shows a Dansette Popular similar to the one I had for my birthday when I was 10 though mine was blue. "Be seeing you" Steve |

I spotted this set in the 1978 French film L'Animal.
No idea what it is, possibly it was a back projection screen with a TV facia added, |

I was always fascinated with that machine hidden in his desk, and Herbert Lom's character was Dr Corder, an association of words I've never forgotten.

A perennial christmas favourite, in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971), the Bucket household sports a rare 1935 Loewe-Opta FE-B. Nice to see a real object in a film full of prop machines!

Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
I've seen it suggested that this set had a modern monitor stuck inside it, but it's still impressive that they found such an old set.
|
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
Spotted on talking pictures tv in film the way ahead a 1944 war film starring amongst others David Niven,Stanley Holloway,William Hartnell and many others, also 1 hour 28 minutes in a large Philips radio not sure what model, looks like one of the superinductance ones.I didnt get a pic off the tv but the film is on youtube, dont know if this has been spotted before. Graham.

Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
Probably the wrong thread, but did anybody notice the BBC news footage of Claire O'Neal on the Today programme? There she is, speaking into a 4038 ribbon on an old BBC table stand with a pop shield. Nothing wrong with that, quite the reverse, but I thought domestic radio had abandoned the 4038 long since. Full marks to some SM for using appropriate technology.

Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
In the latest TV series of Endeavour I noted he had a different record player, can any one identify it?
John |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
I have to admit that I don't often take in what make or model of TV, Radio, or what have you is featured in a TV program or film I'm watching. Sometimes, if it's the same as or similar to, anything I used to own, I may do so, but not otherwise.
|
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
Morse's new record player is a Bush SRP31, thank god! He had a succession of very poor quality machines in the previous series, just as in the original "Morse" he never seemed to have the same transistor on his desk, but had various Fidelity RAD series sets. Funny that, I'd have thought he would have had a Hacker.
I obviously watch far too much tv. Rick. |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (not anachronisms)
Indeed a Hacker, some did make their way past the outskirts of Maidenhead (Oxford). Mind you a serious music enthusiast doesn't really care upon what it is played on.
