Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (NOT ANACHRONISMS)
A cobbled together prop is OK. The trouble comes when they use recognisable wrong equipment. Seeing someone shouting into a microphone while twiddling the tuning knob on a BC221 is funny if you recognise it.
But if we insisted on real gear, props departments would have to build real atom bombs, real death-dealing positronic ray machines and real daleks. It could be nasty if one got on the loose. The target audience of films and TV are electromuggles. The BBC iPlayer currently has 'The Shining' as their contribution to people's mental health in current circumstances. The radio transceiver at the hotel looks to be by Collins. So full marks to Mr Kubrick. David |

The Shining:
'You see? It's okay, he saw it on the television' The current Playstation 5 (PS5) ad shows a brief nixie tube sequence as part of a montage of older technology. (So at least someone knew what they were doing..) Dave |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (NOT ANACHRONISMS)
Watching an old (1980s) episode of 'Cheers' this morning, much of the plot centred around a rather grand looking house.
In the final scene of the episode a more distant shot revealed a mast-mounted quarter wave ground plane for CB (9' vertical, three 9' horizontal radials) looming over the house, a indication of how normal / essential CB radio was considered to be at the time, when even someone with a nice posh house thought nothing of having such ungainly looking metalwork bolted to it. |

Watching Money for Nothing on TV yesterday, I saw this piece of equipment on a shelf behind the chap who makes the weird lamps. Been bugging me; don't recognise it at all; looks like a test set for a transceiver perhaps? Looks to be around 2ft tall. Any ideas folks? Best I could do with the pic; it was never in focus in the recording unfortunately.

Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (NOT ANACHRONISMS)
Could be genuine and possibly American.

Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (NOT ANACHRONISMS)
It certainly looked genuine; if he had made it would have had a couple of light bulbs on top. ;)
Looks like a sig gen on top half; what bottom half does is a mystery? Sadly can't read the manufacturers name on the bottom, unless someone recognises the style of the logo? |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (NOT ANACHRONISMS)
Possibly RME Let’s hope he doesn’t ‘improve’ it.

Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (NOT ANACHRONISMS)
Yes, let's hope Jim; makes me cringe sometimes watching them destroy a perfectly good antique piece of equipment. :(

What was the radio that HM Queen has on her desk in "The Crown" (and, one imagines, in reality)? Nice looking number with a pleasant green glowing dial.

Radio Ham in the Avengers
Did any one see the Amateur Radio Station in this mornings ITV4 rerun of the Avengers ?
Emma Peel visits a Radio Ham with a impressive Shack, for advice on strange Radio Signals, being used for jamming. When I could take my eyes of a gorgeous young Dianna Rig, I spotted a Heathkit Mohican, a Hallicrafters RX poss a A38, R1155, KW SWR Meter, possible a KW2000 or similar, and loads of other equipment I didn't recognize, but apart from the ubiquitous Chess Board, (a touch of the Tony Hancocks) it did look the part. However I did miss some of the sequence, and would like to see it again, is it available on catch up ?:dunce: Or what ever:shrug: Ken G6HZG |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (NOT ANACHRONISMS)
Just watched Hard days night (Beatles) on BBC Iplayer.
Lots of Shots of 60s TV Cameras, mixing boards and recording equipment in a couple of scenes. |
Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (NOT ANACHRONISMS)
I was watching "Bridge of Spies" on Netflix yesterday
Quite near the beginning the "spy" in the US has a desk with the various radios on it. Some broadcast sets and I spotted (I think it is) a Hallicrafters SX-111 ham band RX Later in the film "evidence" is being examined but its mostly cameras and no radios involved No shots of the Collins gear in the Spy plane Fred |

Spotted this old TV set in the 1963 film Calculated Risk.
This set was old even then. The set was made by a well known manufacturer. DFWB. |

Re: Old TV on TPTV.
I know the make and model David. It was made at Cxxxxxn at exactly an hour before midnight. John. [Don't want to spoil it!] John.
PS Clashed! |
Re: Old TV on TPTV.
Hi David, I've just been watching the same film . I thought it was a Philips as the badge could be seen above the screen.
Regards Gary. |
Re: Old TV on TPTV.
Hi Gary,
the Philips 1101 was one of most reliable sets ever made. Many of these sets never needed a service call throughout the usual eight to ten years use in customers homes. DFWB. |
Re: Old TV on TPTV.
Hi David , their reliability record is fantastic really for the era. I've always assumed this era of sets weren't too good

Re: Vintage Radios, TVs etc in films and on TV (NOT ANACHRONISMS)
Watching the American 'Late Show' with Stephen Colbert to keep abreast of happenings over there, he's broadcasting from home and on a sideboard behind him is one of those mock-vintage record players... the suitcase-looking ones. Yuk!
Presumably it's just set-dressing - I hope. David |
