Toshiba 4000CDT again!

My restoration of this Toshiba LT is coming along nicely. However, from cold it takes about 5 to 6 quick shutdowns with the power button to get it to boot correctly. It just hangs at the Toshiba screen and even using escape key to enter bios after pressing F1 doesnt work.

Once normal operation is resumed access to Bios is possible with above technique.
It is running a "new" 30GB hard drive that shows no errors and have reloaded Win 98 SE 3 times with same effect. Bios settings look correct.
It has the original Toshiba 32Mb ram fitted, could it be a memory fault?

Puzzled!

Try looking in the bios to see if there is a built in RAM test there - sometimes happens.

30GB sounds like a big drive for 98SE to get its head around - presumably you have it partitioned into smaller chunks?

If you have another drive try either doing a duplicate install of Win98 on that (to rule out a problem with the Win'98 installation on your first drive) or alternatively a 32-bit version of Linux, such as 32-bit Lubuntu, just to see if something which is not your current Win'98 installation will run reliably on the hardware.

If none of those options work any better than the current Win'98 install then you may be looking at a hardware problem.

No, no built in mem test. tried loading on a 4Gb drive, same results.
It is looking as if hardware problem, have ordered a new 128Mb Ram module.
If that doesn't work, guess out with freezer spray whilst it is working correctly and see if can identify problem area. Could be a dodgy electrolytic or a transistor.
I need to get it reliable as it is needed with MS-DOS and RS-232 port for a Vertex repeater and control logic. Running on modern machine with USB to RS-232 does not work!

New 128Mb ram arrived this morning, cured problem. seems also 4000cdt is happy with 30Gb hard drive.

No need, 98SE-era PII machines were usually fine up to 32 GB when running FAT32, and that was more a hardware limitation than a software one (I've got an Epox PII motherboard which won't boot with anyting larger than 30 GB plugged in, even a 40 GB drive jumpered down to 32 GB).

Ah, obviously my memory was just on the wrong side of the threshold.

A cool device, my father had one, I remember that he suffered for a long time with it, it's a pity that he threw it out.
